I'm utterly speechless
Ok, so we all know I have libertarian leanings that flare up from time to time. I ran over to the library tonight to pick up a book, and the librarian looked at my t-shirt ("That's okay, I wasn't using my civil liberties anyway.") and said: "You know, I don't know if you shirt is funny or not anymore." I smiled and went on my way.So I eventually got Maggie to sleep at 9:20 (after being polled about the war in Iraq, GW Bush, and the Chafee-Whitehouse senate race) and was checking the news before bed. That's when I found this little tidbit. I'm not even angry because I can't believe congress, partisan or not, would pass such an unpatriotic bit of drivel.
If you go to
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/cpquery/?&sid=cp109DLBkw&refer=&r_n=hr664p1.109&db_id=109&item=&sel=TOC_179778&
and scroll down to the end, you'll find this:
Provisions of Chapter Sole Basis for Review of Miliary Commission Procedures and Actions- Except as otherwise provided in this chapter and notwithstanding any other provision of law (including section 2241 of title 28 or any other habeas corpus provision), no court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider any claim or cause of action whatsoever, including any action pending on or filed after the date of the enactment of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, relating to the prosecution, trial, or judgment of a military commission under this chapter, including challenges to the lawfulness of procedures of military commissions under this chapter.
Now, I'm not a laywer, but did the House really pass a bill that says no court, including the Supreme Court can review the legality of the law? Unbelievable.
Even a year ago, I would have though these guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P-hvPJPTi4 were tinfoil hat wearing nutjobs, but now, I'm only 97% sure they are...
