Thousands Standing Around
So the TSA screener in Tampa wasn't too thrilled when he found this in my carry-on.
Now that looks pretty nasty - but it's really not. The blade is only 1.8 inches long as Spyderco Ladybug is intended for your keyring. So I unhappily surrended the Ladybug so I could get on my flight. Remember, the new TSA rules allow you to have 4 inch bladed scissors, but not a keychain knife less than half of that.
And here's the best part - I took the knife off my keychain in Hartford before I left, and then decided to put my keys in my checked luggage as well. And I didn't touch my keys again for my whole trip.
This means that when I screwed up and put the Ladybug in the wrong bag at the ticket counter, I did so in Hartford *before* passing through the security checkpoint. And clearly, the Spyderco made it to Florida so the Tampa TSA agent could confiscate it... oddly enough, in late Sept 2001, I had a pair of ~3.5 in scissors seized from my shaving kit in San Francisco. And that was also the return leg of a flight out of Hartford.
What was it Ben Franklin said about the perception of security?
