Good times, eh
So I'm starting the first of my qualifying exams (aka quals) today. I have one week to answer the following question:
Sweet is a singular perceptual experience yet there appears to be multiple ways to reach this percept. Your qualifying examination should introduce this topic and discuss the following points in a format that would be appropriate for publication as a review article for food and nutrition professionals (ie, word count maximum at 6000 words).
chemical theories of sweetness, including diverse tastants (eg, non-carbohydrate)
multiple receptor mechanisms in animal and human studies
potential areas for signal integration to produce a unitary sweet taste
cross-disciplinary synthesis of genetic, molecular, behavior and human psychophysical evidence on sweet taste mechanisms
implications of advancements in sweet taste to improving human nutrition
